    Mind the Gap: From Desktop to App

    In this article we present a new mobile game, edugames4all MicrobeQuest!, that covers core learning objectives from the European curriculum on microbe transmission, food and hand hygiene, and responsible antibiotic use. The game is aimed at 9 to 12 year olds and it is based on the desktop version of the edugames4all platform games. We discuss the challenges and lessons learned transitioning from a desktop based game to a mobile app. We also present the seamless evaluation obtained by integrating the assessment of educa- tional impact of the game into the game mechanics

    A hydro-elastic model of hydrocephalus

    We combine elements of poroelasticity and of fluid mechanics to construct a mathematical model of the human brain and ventricular system. The model is used to study hydrocephalus, a pathological condition in which the normal flow of the cerebrospinal fluid is disturbed, causing the brain to become deformed. Our model extends recent work in this area by including flow through the aqueduct, by incorporating boundary conditions which we believe more accurately represent the anatomy of the brain and by including time dependence. This enables us to construct a quantitative model of the onset, development and treatment of this condition. We formulate and solve the governing equations and boundary conditions for this model and give results which are relevant to clinical observations

    A User Satisfaction Study of the London Congestion Charging e-Service

    This research seeks to measure citizen satisfaction with the electronic London Congestion Charging (LCC) payment system offered by Transport For London (TFL) in the United Kingdom (UK). The paper reports on the findings of a survey of 500 users of the TFL LCC online payment system. Satisfaction is measured using the four dimensions from the COBRA framework 0that comprise the cost, opportunity, benefits and risk assessment constructs. The results show that most citizens using the LCC electronic service are satisfied with the service and that the service meets their essential needs. The paper also presents the results of qualitative feedback obtained from the participants that can be used to determine the areas that need further improvement in the current electronic LCC electronic-service (e-service) system and potential influences on user satisfaction

    Effects of Multiple Scattering in Cold Nuclear Matter on J/psi Suppression and <p_T^2> in Heavy Ion Collisions

    Coherent multiple scatterings of c and cbar quark pairs in the environment of heavy ion collisions have been used in a previous work by Qiu et al. [Qiu:1998rz] to study J/psi suppression. That model suggests that heavy quark re-scatterings in a cold nuclear medium can completely explain the centrality dependence of the observed J/psi suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS [Abreu:2001kd]. Their calculations also revealed significant differences under the assumptions of a color singlet or color octet production mechanism. A more recent analytic calculation [Fujii:2003fq], which includes incoherent final-state re-scatterings with explicit momentum transfer fluctuations in three dimensions, indicates much less suppression and little sensitivity to the production mechanism. In this article, we study simultaneously both the J/psi suppression and p_T modifications, at SPS and RHIC energies. We mainly focus on incoherent momentum transfer fluctuations in two dimensions, which is more appropriate for the heavy-ion collision kinematics. Our analytic and Monte-Carlo calculations reinforce the analytic results in [Fujii:2003fq]. Additionally, we find that the experimental J/psi suppression and from nucleus-nucleus collisions at the SPS or RHIC cannot simultaneously be described in this incoherent multiple scattering framework for any value of the fluctuation strength parameter .Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted for publication; v2:10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B Added comparison with SPS p+A dat

    Based on the quark coalescence model for the parton-to-hadron phase transition in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, we relate the elliptic flow (v2v_2) of high \pt hadrons to that of high \pt quarks. For high \pt hadrons produced from an isospin symmetric and quark-antiquark symmetric partonic matter, magnitudes of their elliptic flows follow a flavor ordering as (v2,π=v2,N)>(v2,Λ=v2,Σ)>v2,K>v2,Ξ>(v2,ϕ=v2,Ω)(v_{2,\pi}=v_{2,N}) > (v_{2,\Lambda}=v_{2,\Sigma}) > v_{2,K} > v_{2,\Xi} > (v_{2,\phi}=v_{2,\Omega}) if strange quarks have a smaller elliptic flow than light quarks. The elliptic flows of high \pt hadrons further follow a simple quark counting rule if strange quarks and light quarks have same high \pt spectrum and coalescence probability.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, revte
